Before you start: the only two things you need
You need the 12306 app (the official railway booking app, "railway12306") and your passport. Foreigners book with the passport number that's in the app, not an internal Chinese ID. The whole process I just ran for my own ticket took about 7 minutes end to end, though first-timers usually take 20 because of verification. Budget for that.
Step 1 — register and verify
Sign up in the app, enter your passport number and a phone number that can receive SMS, then complete identity verification. This is the step that bites: for a foreign passport it can take 1 to 7 days for verification to clear. So register before you land, not on the day you want to travel. If verification is still pending, your order can be held and then released once it clears.
Step 2 — book the ride
Search your route, pick a train and a seat class. Seat classes from cheap to expensive: second class (the default, about ¥53–¥233 between two big cities depending on distance), first class (wider seats, ~1.6× the price), and business class (about 3×). You can buy up to 15 days ahead. Pay with Alipay, WeChat Pay, or a linked card. I always take second class unless it's over 8 hours, when the first-class extra money stops feeling like a splurge.
Step 3 — the day of travel
Arrive at the station 30–45 minutes early. Check-in is automated: tap your passport at the gate and it releases. Keep the passport on you at all times — they ask for it on board about half the time. The platform number and the boarding are posted on a screen, so follow your train's number, not a memory.
The 3 things that actually slow first-timers down
Verification delay
Foreign passports take up to a week to clear. Register early and the problem disappears.
Getting the city wrong
Many cities have multiple stations. Beijing alone has Beijing West, Beijing South and Beijing North — they're 20+ km apart and not interchangeable.
Not knowing you can fully refund
Up to 15 minutes before departure you get a full refund in the app; after that it steps down. Flexible, if you know the window.
What it feels like once you're on
The first thing that's different is the quiet. Second class is busy but not chaotic, the trains are genuinely on time to the minute, and a Beijing-to-Shanghai ride that older guides still quote as "a day trip" now takes about 4.5 hours on the fastest G-series. It's the single best value transport upgrade in the country.
Register your 12306 account the day you land, verify with your passport, and the rest is just tapping through. Once it's set up, you'll move across the country faster than you can book a hotel room.
