Short version, then the detail
If you want a slower, more liveable, cat-and-tea pace, Chengdu. If you want density, vertical streets, heavier spice and a rawer energy, Chongqing. Both are 2-hour-plus flights from each other but feel like different countries. Here's what I noticed after a week in each.
The 5 things that actually differ
| Dimension | Chengdu | Chongqing |
|---|---|---|
| Terrain | Flat basin, easy walking | Hills everywhere, GPS lies about distance |
| Spice heat | Mala but balanced | Thicker oil, rawer, hotter |
| Daytime vibe | Relaxed, caffeinated | Fast, loud, industrial |
| Night | Tea houses, quiet bars | 24-hour city, bridges lit up |
| Daily food cost | ¥60–90 for a proper 3 meals | ¥50–80, street food is cheap |
Where to spend your day in each
In Chengdu I kept returning to the tea houses around People's Park — you can rent a bamboo chair for a pot of tea that costs about ¥10–15 and sit for hours while locals fish and gossip. The panda center is a 40-minute bus ride away and best at 7 a.m., when the pandas are actually eating. In Chongqing the geometry is the point: the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meeting, the Caotangli old district where the 10th floor looks like the 1st, and night markets that run past 3 a.m.
The answer most blogs skip
You don't have to pick. Both fit a China itinerary within a day's train ride of each other (about 5–6 hours by high-speed rail from Chongqing to Chengdu is not direct, so most people do the cities separately). My rule: if you have 3 days, give 2 to one and 1 to the other. If you have to truly choose and you hate crowds that follow the river, Chengdu is the calmer bet; if you're here to be a little overwhelmed, Chongqing is the one.
Chengdu is where you want to sit for a week and slow down. Chongqing is where you want to eat till 2 a.m. and climb a hill. Both are worth it; they just ask different things of you.
