The first thing I bought on Taobao was a ¥29 phone case, and I spent 40 minutes working out how to type my address. The second was a 1.2-litre stainless thermos for ¥89 — the same model was ¥260 two streets away in a shopping mall. Taobao is where most ordinary shopping in China happens, and it is not difficult; it is simply built for someone who reads Chinese, has a mainland phone number and knows that 收货地址 means "delivery address". Here is the whole sequence, with the four points where first-timers stop.
What you need before you open the app
- A mainland phone number that receives SMS. The pickup code (取件码) is texted to the number on the order. A number that receives nothing in China turns every delivery into a phone call.
- A payment method with a balance in it. Alipay and WeChat Pay accept some international cards, but binding one is a coin toss. A Chinese account with ¥300–500 in it is the difference between an order and an evening of error messages.
- Your address in Chinese characters. Photograph your hotel's card or copy an address you have already received; do not translate it yourself.
- Your sizes in cm and kg. A Chinese "L" fits someone noticeably smaller than an "L" at home.
Step 1: Register the account before you look at anything
Sign up in the 淘宝 app, then check 我的淘宝 → 设置 → 账号与安全 to confirm the number is bound. Taobao and Alipay (支付宝) are separate accounts that have to agree: mismatched numbers produce a payment failure three screens later that looks like a bank problem and is not.
Do it on hotel Wi-Fi the evening you arrive. Five minutes, and it is the one step you cannot rush later.
Step 2: Save your address in the Chinese order
Go to 我的淘宝 → 收货地址 and add one. The order is 省 (province) → 市 (city) → 区/县 (district) → 街道 → 详细地址; the first three are dropdowns, so they cannot be mistyped. Building, unit, floor and room all go in the last field.
Use the name on the ID you would show at a pickup counter — couriers sometimes check, 驿站 staff always do. I saved two addresses the first week; switching later was one tap instead of another 40 minutes.
Step 3: Search with Chinese words, or with a photo
English searches return almost nothing. You need three or four Chinese nouns — ask the shop assistant, or copy the characters off the box. 保温杯 316 不锈钢 1.2L is a search; "thermos" is not.
When you cannot get the words, use 拍立淘, the camera icon in the search bar: photograph the object and Taobao returns near-identical listings with prices. I did it with a lamp in a Chengdu department store — ¥480 on the shelf, ¥156 on my phone, and the assistant asked me to send her the link.
Step 4: Read the listing like a receipt, not like an advert
Four things on a Taobao product page are worth more than the photos:
- The shop's badge. Sellers climb 心 → 钻石 → 皇冠 → 金冠 as reviews accumulate. A 金冠 shop has done this for years; with a new 心 shop, you are the test.
- Three scores out of 5 — 描述, 服务, 物流. 4.8 and above is normal; under 4.6 means complaints, and the reviews say what about.
- 买家秀 — buyer photos, buried below the studio shots. That is the honest picture; 卖家秀 is the seller's own.
- 月销 — units sold in the last month. 20,000 sales at 4.9 is not a mystery; 3 sales at a suspiciously low price is.
For a branded product, search on 天猫 (Tmall) and look for 官方旗舰店, the official flagship store. You pay more and stop worrying.
Step 5: Ask the seller one question before you pay
Tap 客服 — a bot first, a human within a minute or two in working hours. One message covers most of what goes wrong:
有现货吗?今天几点前付款可以发货?身高 182、体重 78 公斤,穿什么码? — "Is it in stock? How late can I pay today and still ship? I am 182 cm and 78 kg, which size?"
Most sellers dispatch everything paid before roughly 17:00 the same day; after that it waits a day, and a Friday-evening order can sit until Monday. Ninety seconds of asking saves two days.
Step 6: Pay — and read what kind of purchase it is
Choose Alipay, WeChat Pay, a bank card, or 花呗 (an Alipay credit line), then read the breakdown: 优惠券 (coupon), 满减 (e.g. 满 199 减 30) and 运费 (shipping, ¥6–12, or 包邮 — free).
One trap is 预售, common around 618 (18 June) and 双11 (11 November): you pay a 定金 (deposit) now and a 尾款 (balance) on a fixed later date — miss it and you lose the deposit. Filter for 现货 if you want the thing now.
Step 7: Collect it, then check it before you confirm
Tracking lives in 我的淘宝 → 待收货, and in the 菜鸟 (Cainiao) app, which is where the pickup code appears. Delivery normally takes 2–4 days within the same region and about a week cross-country. There are three endings:
- 驿站 (Cainiao station) — a shop near you holds the parcel and texts a 取件码. Show the code, give your last four digits, sign. They hold parcels 7–15 days.
- 快递柜 (locker, often 丰巢 Fengchao) — free for about 18 hours, then a small per-day fee. Fine if you are home; expensive if you are on a train.
- 上门 (to the door) — 顺丰 SF Express and 京东 usually knock. This is the easiest and the reason some listings cost ¥8 more.
Open it, then tap 确认收货 — that releases your money to the seller. If it is wrong, 退货退款 starts the 7-day no-reason return, counted from the day after you signed. Check for 运费险 (return-postage insurance, often ¥0.5–2): it decides whether the return costs you ¥12 or nothing.
The four places first-timers actually get stuck
- The address. Missing room numbers send parcels circling a city for three days. Copy one that works; never compose one from a dictionary.
- 预售 mistaken for 现货. A low price with a small 定金 is a pre-sale, not a bargain. The real price is 定金 + 尾款, and the balance has a deadline.
- Sizes. Send height and weight in kg/cm and let the seller choose. Guessing by letter size is how I ended up with a "XL" T-shirt that fitted a twelve-year-old.
- The phone number on the order. No code, no parcel. If you change SIM cards mid-trip, update the number on the order before it ships, not after.
What it costs and how fast it arrives
| Item | Typical cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Account setup + saving an address | Free | 5–10 min, once |
| 1.2 L 316 stainless thermos (mall price ¥260) | ¥89, 包邮 | Ordered 21:10, arrived day 3 |
| Phone case, first-ever order | ¥29 + ¥6 shipping | 4 days |
| Standard domestic shipping | ¥6–12, free above a threshold | 2–4 days same region, ~7 days cross-country |
| Return under the 7-day rule | ¥0 with 运费险, otherwise ~¥10–15 | 6 min to file, refund in 1–3 days |
| Locker fee after the free window (丰巢) | A few yuan per day | — |
The ¥89 thermos is still on my desk three winters later, which is the honest summary: not everything is good, but the ceiling is far above the price, and the 7-day return makes a bad buy cheap to undo.
Seven steps, but only two are hard: write the address in the Chinese order, and put a number on the order that actually receives texts. Do those and Taobao stops being an app you cannot use — and the thermos costs a third of the mall price.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Chinese phone number for Taobao?
Taobao and Alipay are separate accounts that have to agree, so sign up and bind your number before you shop; confirm the number is bound under 我的淘宝, 设置, 账号与安全.
How do I search on Taobao if I cannot read Chinese?
English searches return almost nothing; use three or four Chinese nouns (ask the shop assistant, or copy the characters off the box), or search by photo.
What on a Taobao listing actually matters most?
Four things beat the photos: the 满减 threshold, shipping, the real price after coupons, and the pickup and return terms, so read the listing like a receipt, not an ad.
How long does Taobao delivery take?
Normally 2 to 4 days within the same region; tracking lives in 我的淘宝, 待收货, and in the Cainiao app, which is where the pickup code appears.
